Why this exists

Meat got expensive. Guessing did not get cheaper.

Nearly a third of what a South African household spends on food goes on meat. You buy the lamb rib, you invite the people, you light the fire — and then you cut into it and it's grey in the middle. Or worse, it's pink where it shouldn't be and you spend Sunday hoping nobody phones you.

Most of us were never actually taught. We were handed the tongs and expected to know.

Braai frequency 80%

of South Africans braai regularly. Roughly a third of us do it every week.

Food budget 1 in 3

rands of household food spend goes on meat. A ruined tray is real money gone.

Safe chicken 74°

Celsius, right through. You cannot see it. You can only measure it.

Household meat spend from Stats SA's consumer price basket. Everything else, we learnt the hard way.

Three steps. That's it.

Push it in. Pick the cut. Wait for the buzz.

  1. 1

    Push the probe in

Into the thickest part of the meat, up to the safety line. Chicken, lamb rib, tomahawk, whole snoek — same probe.

  2. 2

Pick your cut on the app

Choose the meat and how you like it. The app sets the target for you, so you don't have to memorise a single number.

  3. 3

    Go be a host

Pour the drinks. Your phone buzzes when it's time to pull the meat off, and again when it's done resting.

The numbers, for our cuts

Every braai temperature that actually matters in South Africa

Imported thermometers give you brisket and Thanksgiving turkey. Here are the cuts that actually come off a South African fire — pull the meat at these internal temperatures and let it rest.

Rump / sirloin 54°

Medium rare. Pull, rest 5 min, slice against the grain.

Tomahawk / T-bone 52°

Thick cuts carry heat hard. Pull early and rest 10 min.

Boerewors 71°

Cooked through, still juicy. Never split the coil.

Chicken pieces 74°

Measure the thigh, off the bone. Not negotiable.

Spatchcock chicken 74°

Thickest part of the thigh. Breast around 70° is fine.

Lamb rib 63°

Then move it over hot coals for the last crisp.

Sosaties 63°

Probe the biggest cube in the middle of the skewer.

Pork chops / ribs 63°

Rest 3 minutes. Dry pork is a temperature problem.

Whole snoek 60°

Flesh side down first. Flakes apart at the number.

Burger patty 71°

Mince is not steak. It has to go all the way through.

Leg of lamb 58°

Medium. Rest a full 15 minutes before carving.

Beef potjie 90°

Not doneness — collagen. Hold here and the shin falls apart.

Green tickets are food safety minimums, not preferences. Poultry and mince have to reach theirs. These are pull temperatures — meat keeps climbing 2–4° while it rests.

Honest comparison

There's a R150 option and a R3 000 option. We built the one in between.

The cheap probes on the marketplaces have no app, no support and nobody to phone. The imported smart probes cost more than the braai itself.

Questions we actually get

Before you order

Will it work on an open braai, not just a Weber?

Yes. Open braai, kettle, gas, oven, air fryer, pan. Keep it out of direct flame licks and you're fine. On an open braai, push it in from the side so the handle sits away from the hottest coals.

Do I need Wi-Fi at the braai?

No. The probe talks to your phone over Bluetooth. Keep your phone within about 10 metres and the alerts come through. No data, no signal, no load shedding problem.

Does it work with my phone?

Any iPhone from iOS 13 up, and Android 8 up. That covers almost every phone in use in South Africa right now.

When will it arrive?

Orders placed before 12:00 on a working day ship the same day. Main centres 2–3 working days, outlying areas 3–5. You get a tracking link by SMS and email the moment it ships.

How do I pay?

Card, Apple Pay and instant EFT through our payment provider, Paystack. Your card details never touch our store.

What if I don't like it?

Braai with it for 30 nights. If it's not for you, WhatsApp us and we'll arrange collection and refund you in full. You don't need to keep the packaging.

Still not sure? WhatsApp us. A person answers, weekdays 08:00–17:00.
